How to Change or Replace your Filter Media or Softening Resin
- Put the unit in bypass, then hold the extra cycle button on the display for 5 seconds to initiate a backwash. When the drain line is opened you will hear the pressure released down the drain. Once the pressure has been released, you can unplug the control head.
- Disconnect the bypass from the control head by loosening the screws that hold the clips that secure the bypass to the control head.
- You can now gently pull the system away from the plumbing, separating the control head from the bypass valve.
- Disconnect the drain line from the control head.
- You may need two people for this step, have one person hold the tank, and one person grab the control head and turn counter clock wise to unscrew the whole control head from the tank.
- Use a shop vac, pump, or siphon through the riser tube in the center of the tank to remove all the water from the tank.
- Then you can use a strong shop vac with a smaller hose on the end or a pipe to suck out the filter media, or take the tank outside and dump it upside down and flush out the media with a garden hose.
- Once all the old media is out, inspect and clean the riser tube and tank, make sure the riser tube is centered in the tank. Cover the opening on the riser tube to prevent anything from getting inside while loading.
- If you have gravel put the gravel in the tank first, it goes on the bottom. Most softeners do NOT use gravel, while most other systems DO. Then put the filter media or resin in on top of the gravel.
- Remove covering on the riser tube. Place control head back on the tank hand tight only.
- Connect bypass and drain, plug in control head. Slowly open bypass valve just enough to get water filling the tank. Keep a cold water faucet open in the house while opening the bypass to allow air to escape. Once the tank is full you may fully open the bypass valve.
- Keep cold water faucet open full open to flush the filter media until running clear.
- Make sure the control head is programmed correctly and you are ready to use your system as normal.
